Understanding Yelp's Review Policies and Recommendation System

While third party reviews play a big role in increasing the online visibility of your business, automating Yelp review requests may not be your best strategy.  Unlike most review channels, Yelp strictly prohibits soliciting reviews and uses automated software to filter out encouraged feedback.

How Yelp's Rating System Works

Yelp divides all customer feedback into two distinct categories, but only one impacts your public profile:
  1. Recommended Reviews: Displayed prominently on your profile, these reviews exclusively determine your overall star rating and total review count
  2. Not Currently Recommended Reviews: Tucked behind a small link at the bottom of your business page, these reviews do not factor into your overall star rating or public review tally.

Why Auto-Encouragement Backfires

Yelp’s Content Guidelines forbid asking customers for reviews via direct links, automated emails, or post-survey prompts.  Sending automated requests often triggers Yelp’s detection algorithms to flag incoming feedback as solicited.  Reviews prompted by automated links are almost immediately categorized as "not currently recommended," rendering your customer's reviews invisible to the average Yelp user.
Yelp’s automated recommendation software continuously analyzes hundreds of signals to evaluate every review without human intervention.  Key factors include:
  1. User Activity & History: Reviews from active Yelp members with established histories, profile details, and regular community engagement are far more likely to be recommended. Accounts created solely to leave a single review for your business are flagged as unreliable.
  2. Solicitation & Traffic Patterns: The software flags suspicious activity, such as sudden spikes in reviews originating from third-party links, campaign tracking URLs, or automated redirect chains.
  3. Bias & Authenticity: The system screens for potential conflicts of interest, filtering out feedback that appears incentivised, requested or written by employees, friends or competitors.
To optimize your online presence, configure LoyaltyLoop to route automated review requests to platforms like Google, which permit customer outreach.  For Yelp, rely strictly on organic discovery by placing passive "Find Us on Yelp" stickers, web badges or email signature links without directly requesting a review.

Idea
For high-value promoters, consider sending a personalized, non automated email that does not directly request a review.   As an example:

Subject: A personal thank you from [Your Business Name]!

We are absolutely thrilled to hear that you had such a great experience with [insert a specific detail they mentioned in the survey, e.g., your recent service call / our new product].

It's customers like you who make what we do so rewarding. I actually shared your feedback with [Employee Name / the rest of our team] this morning, and it truly made everyone's day.
